We have been following the box that was never there — out of space, then out of time, where an uncaused event turned out to be a box in time, and forbidden. Now we stay with time, but we change the question. Not whether events are determined. How time itself is built. What the past is, what the present is, what the future is — and why only one of the three is ever the place where anything happens.

We carry the usual picture without examining it. The past is gone, fixed, dead behind us. The future is open, empty, waiting ahead. The present is a thin moving line between them, sliding from the empty future into the dead past. It is a tidy picture and it is wrong in all three parts. Let me give you a different one, and I will use three things you can see: a crystal, a flame, the smoke that rises off it.

Start with the past, because we get it most wrong.

We think the past is gone. It is not gone. It is done — which is a different thing entirely. The past is flow that has finished flowing and set, the way molten rock cools and sets into crystal. The crystal is not moving anymore. But it is not nothing, and it is not dead. It is there, hard and specific, and it shapes everything that comes after it.

Watch what the set past actually does. A river cut a canyon ten thousand years ago. That cutting is over, done, past. But the canyon is right there, and every drop of water that falls in that country now runs where the old canyon says it can run. The past did not vanish. It hardened into the shape that channels the present. The riverbed is the crystal — finished flow, holding the form that tells the living water where it is allowed to go.

You are the same. Everything that happened to you is over. And all of it is here, set into the shape of you — the language you think in, the fears you flinch from, the skills in your hands. None of that is happening anymore. All of it is hardened into the channel the present-you flows through. The past is not behind you. The past is the riverbed you are running in, this second.

So the crystal is not inert. That is the thing to hold. The done-past is not a dead record filed away. It is constraint — it is the piping. It does not act, the way the present acts, but it shapes what the present can do, the way the canyon shapes the water without itself moving. The burning log remembers the tree it was: it burns this way and not that way because of the grain the tree grew, the years it stood, the fire that scarred it once. The past is in the burning, steering it, even though the past itself is finished. Done, but not gone. Set, but not dead. The crystal pipes the flame.

Now the flame. The present.

The present is the only place anything happens. This sounds obvious and it is not, because we usually imagine the present as a thin line with no width — a knife-edge between past and future, too narrow to hold anything. But that thin line is the only place there is any burning at all. The past has finished burning. The future has not started. The flame — the actual combustion, the actual event, the place where flow is happening right now — is only ever in the present. Always. There is nowhere else for an event to be.

Everything real happens in the flame. Not in the crystal — the crystal is done, it only steers. Not in the smoke — the smoke has not formed yet. The burning, the deciding, the acting, the living, all of it is in the narrow now where the fuel meets the fire. This is why the present feels different from the past and the future, why it has a weight they do not have. It is not just closer. It is the only part of time that is on fire. The past is ash and the future is haze and the present is the actual flame, and the flame is where the world is being made.

And the flame is fed by the crystal. The log that is burning now burns the way its past set it to burn. The present is not free — it is the live edge of the past, the place where all that finished, hardened history finally acts. The flame is where the riverbed’s water actually moves. The present is the past, catching fire.

And the future. The smoke.

Watch what rises off a flame. Smoke — and the smoke is not nothing, and it is not fixed. It has a shape, but a loose one. It drifts where the air pushes it, thins, curls, and you can see roughly where it will go without being able to say exactly. The future is like that. Not the empty, open nothing we imagine. Not a blank waiting to be filled by anything at all. Shaped possibility — smoke rising off this particular flame, carrying the mark of this particular fire.

Here is the thing we get wrong about the future, the mirror of what we get wrong about the past. We think the future is free — wide open, anything could happen. It is not free. It is shaped. The smoke that rises off an oak fire is not the smoke that rises off a coal fire; the future that rises off this present carries the print of this present and the crystal behind it. What can happen next is bounded — piped — by everything that has burned so far. The canyon does not just steer today’s water; it steers where tomorrow’s water can possibly go. The riverbed shapes the smoke.

So the future is real, and it is bounded, and it is not yet decided. Those three at once. Real, because the smoke is really rising. Bounded, because it rises off this fire and no other, carrying this fire’s shape. Not yet decided, because the air has not finished pushing it, because the flame is still burning and the next instant of fuel has not yet caught. The future is not a fixed thing waiting to be revealed, and it is not a free nothing open to anything. It is shaped possibility — the smoke of the present, rising along the channels the past cut, drifting toward a place you can almost, but not quite, name.

Put the three together and the arrow of time falls out of them — and this matters, because the arrow has been a puzzle, and the crystal-flame-smoke picture dissolves it.

People have long asked why time has a direction. Why we remember the past and not the future. Why the cup shatters but never reassembles. Statistical mechanics often begins with an isolated model and entropy increasing toward equilibrium. That model is not a metaphysical sealed box; it is an enormously successful controlled description. The question for this book is how the same asymmetry is accounted for when system and environment are kept explicit.

It comes from the difference between the three states of flow. The arrow of time is the difference between crystallized flow and uncrystallized flow — between what has set and what has not. The past points one way because it is done: set, finished, the way a crystal does not melt back into the liquid it came from on its own. The future points the other way because it is not yet: smoke, unformed, still drifting. The present moves from the one to the other, flow crystallizing moment by moment, the molten now cooling into the set then.

But what is that cooling? If I cannot say what it is, I am only renaming the puzzle. Why does the flame make ash and never unmake it? Why does crystallization have a direction at all? The usual answer is not wrong here — only mislocated, and worth meeting head-on. The reason the log does not un-burn is that burning spreads what was concentrated. The fuel held its energy gathered, ordered, in a few tight bonds; the fire scatters that energy out into heat and light and the wild motion of smoke, spread across far more ways of being arranged than the fuel ever had. And a thing scattered across many arrangements does not, on its own, gather back into the few — not because a law forbids it outright, but because the gathered arrangements are so vastly outnumbered by the scattered ones that the return would be a coincidence beyond all reach of time. That is the real asymmetry, and it is the same asymmetry the textbooks call the second law.

What I am claiming is smaller: the asymmetry does not require us to believe that an isolated model is the ultimate ontology. Entropy maxima and equilibrium states are not fictions; they are valid relative to constraints, conserved quantities, coarse graining, and boundaries. For an open system the accounting extends rather than disappears: system entropy changes through internal production and boundary exchange. The flame exports heat and matter while producing entropy; the room and wider environment belong to the enlarged ledger. Take away the metaphysical box and the arrow does not vanish. The statistical asymmetry and thermodynamic accounting remain, now with the boundary visible.

So the honest version is this. Scattering toward overwhelmingly more numerous macrostates is one source of temporal asymmetry, and it is real whether the model uses an isolated total or an open subsystem. Chapter 1 removed neither equilibrium nor the second law. It removed only the promotion of a useful boundary into an absolute metaphysics. The crystal, flame, and smoke remain a philosophical picture of time; they supplement statistical mechanics rather than replace it.

The past is crystal — finished flow, set hard, not gone and not dead, but constraint: the riverbed, the grain in the log, the piping that steers without itself moving. The present is flame — the one narrow place where anything actually burns, fed by the crystal, the live edge where the world is being made. The future is smoke — shaped possibility, rising off this fire, bounded by the channels the past cut, real and drifting and not yet decided. And the arrow that runs through all three is just flow crystallizing in one direction, the molten now cooling into the fixed then, ash from fuel and never back.

None of it is the tidy line we started with — dead past, empty future, thin present sliding between. It is a fire. History set into the riverbed, burning at its live edge, throwing shaped smoke toward a future it has already half-decided and not yet fixed. We live in the flame, fed by the crystal, watching the smoke. That is what it is to be a thing in time, when time is a burning and not a line.

We have looked at what a thing is, whether its events are caused, and how its time is built. Now we can ask about the shapes such a thing takes when it lasts — when a flow goes on long enough to hold a form across time. One family keeps returning to the eye: the turning form.
