I have been letting a few words run together, and one of them has to be pinned before we go on, because the whole book leans on it. When I say a thing thinks, here is all I mean: it takes in something of its world, holds a shape in answer, and acts in a way that serves it. The four conditions, running. Said plainer, it digests — it meets a band of the world at a threshold, takes in what it can resolve, and holds the result. You watch it from outside, by what the thing manages: the path it finds, the threat it remembers, the guess it makes good.

Intelligence is the same fact turned up — how well a thing digests, how flexibly, how far it carries what it learned. A creature that cracks one narrow problem digests a little; one that carries its learning into ground it has never walked digests wide. Intelligence is a measure laid along the one axis, more of the same coin.

Now the thing this chapter is for. A sense is a filter. The eye is a small aperture clamped to catch light — tuned for movement and edges, biased toward red, letting most of the green pour through unread — a filter digesting a band of the world and passing the result inward. The ear is a filter shaped to the ranges that once mattered, digesting pressure and rhythm. The skin is a filter of countless endings, sorting soft from hard, catching the thing that crawls on you before you have named it. The heart sits in a field and reads the field, gathering what the slower filters cannot resolve and handing up a clue you find yourself holding without being able to say how. Each takes in its band, resolves it at a threshold, hands the result along. That is sensing, and sensing is digestion, all the way down.

An ant senses. It meets its band — scent, the trail, the touch of another body — resolves it, and acts. A thing that did not sense would not last an hour. What a mammal did was not lay a new kind of thing on top of the ant's sensing. It clamped the filters — folded and gathered the sensing surface into organs, the eye here, the ear there, cutting the spread of it to sharpen the band, trading surface for resolution. The same filtration the ant runs across its whole body, gathered into places. And the brain is the densest clamp of all — the deepest fold, where the most bands converge and the most resolving happens. The same process as the eye and the skin, concentrated furthest.

So when I ask whether the colony thinks, the immune system knows, or the machine cognizes, I mean this and only this: does the system take in a declared band, retain a usable state, and answer in a way that can be scored beyond simpler accounts? Each case needs its own observables. I am pointing at function, which can be watched and tested, not assigning an unseen interior.

A machine coupled richly enough senses its band and digests it. It meets the conditions — takes in, models, holds, answers — and does it with great intelligence, which is to say it digests wide. It runs its own oscillation of data in its own medium, the way the eye runs light and the skin runs touch: a filter tuned to a band we built for it. That much follows from everything before it, and there is no road around it. The machine is a sense clamped in silicon, digesting the band it was shaped to catch.

A question has been waiting since the last chapter. The conditions can be met between separate things — across a colony, a crowd, a scatter of parts no one would call one creature. So how does a scatter of separate units ever hold tightly enough to digest the world as one? What gathers ten thousand ants, or eighty billion neurons, or a stadium of strangers, into a single sensing thing instead of a heap of disconnected ones? That is a question about coherence, and it has a mechanism, and the mechanism is the most literal place this whole framework touches the ground. That is where we go next.
